Project Disrupt

Project Disrupt began as an invitation to break the routine of photographic practice — to look differently at what we usually overlook. I chose to focus on plastic waste discarded in the nearby forest.

While the world’s attention is often on plastic in the oceans, the woods quietly carry their own kind of pollution. Hidden under leaves and branches, these fragments of human neglect are easy to pass by. I found a large plastic tarp abandoned beneath the trees and decided to make it the subject of the work — to give form and visibility to what is normally unseen.

The project reverses the natural order of the forest. Instead of photographing what is beautiful or untouched, I photograph what disrupts it. The plastic becomes both model and mirror — a reminder of how easily we ignore what we ourselves have placed there.

Through this act of reversal, Project Disrupt asks what happens when we stop walking past what disturbs the image, and instead bring it to the centre.

This project was a winning contribution to Lensbaby’s Project Disrupt competition in 2018.
